Edge of Dock Levelers

What are Edge of Dock Levelers

Edge of dock levelers are a type of loading platform used to fill the gap between the edge of the loading bay and the trucks and ramps. Unlike hydraulic dock levelers, edge of dock levelers are mounted directly on the platform edge and fixed to the edge of the platform. There is no need to reserve pit space on the platform.                                                                    An edge of dock leveler is a crucial component of modern loading dock systems, designed to enhance the efficiency and safety of the loading and unloading process. This equipment serves as a bridge between the loading dock and the trailer or truck, allowing for smooth and easy transfer of goods.

Seppes edge of dock levelers are ideal for logistics terminals where there is insufficient space for installation.

SEPPES Hot Types of Loading Dock Levelers

At SEPPES, we understand that every warehouse and logistics center has unique needs. That’s why we offer a diverse range of loading dock systems, including hydraulic, mechanical, and vertical dock levelers, designed to improve the efficiency, safety, and flexibility of your loading dock operations.

hydraulic dock leveler

The Hydraulic Warehouse Dock Leveler is the industry standard for high-volume loading docks, offering the ultimate balance of power, durability, and ease of use.

dock lift

When a standard dock height is not available or you need to load from ground level to various truck heights, the Scissor Dock Lift provides a versatile, space-saving lifting solution.

The Mechanical Dock Leveler is a cost-effective and reliable solution for facilities with light-to-medium traffic. It operates via a high-tension spring system, requiring no electricity.

vertical dock leveler

The Vertical Storing Dock Leveler is the premier choice for climate-controlled facilities. By storing in a vertical position, it ensures maximum thermal integrity and hygiene.

Why Choose Edges of Dock Leveler?

Comparison Table: Edge vs. Hydraulic Pit Dock Levelers

Selecting the appropriate loading bay equipment depends on your specific operational volume, pit requirements, and budget. While both systems facilitate smooth material handling, they serve distinct warehouse environments. Below is a technical comparison to help you determine the most efficient choice for your facility.

Technical FeaturesEdge-of-Dock (EOD) LevelerHydraulic Dock LevelerStrategic Advantage
Installation MethodMounted directly to the dock face; no floor pit required.Installed in a pre-formed concrete pit within the floor.EOD is ideal for retrofitting; Hydraulic offers maximum stability.
Operational RangeLimited to 5 inches above or below dock height.Wide range, typically up to 12 inches above or below.Hydraulic handles a much wider variety of trailer heights.
Loading CapacityStandard duty, usually between 20,000 to 35,000 lbs.Heavy duty, ranging from 30,000 to 80,000+ lbs.Hydraulic is built for heavy-duty forklift traffic and high loads.
Operating FrequencyLow to medium frequency (limited daily cycles).High frequency (designed for 24/7 continuous use).Hydraulic maximizes throughput in busy distribution centers.
Maintenance & LongevitySimple mechanical design; requires manual or air operation.Advanced hydraulic cylinders; push-button automation.Hydraulic offers superior long-term ROI through reduced labor.
Initial InvestmentLower upfront cost; fast and easy installation.Higher initial cost including pit construction.EOD is the most cost-effective solution for light-duty docks.

How to Use Edge of Dock Plate?

  • Once the lorry is parked in the loading area, undo the operating lever fixings and insert the operating lever into the platform.
  • Using the operating lever inwards, pull the platform downwards until the operating lever reaches the horizontal position, which is also the highest position of the dock leveler.
  • Slowly raise the lever upwards and the hitch opens automatically to the rear of the truck.
  • After confirming that the hitch is securely attached, remove the lever, return it to the lever mounting device, and the loading edge of the dock leveler is ready for use.

Installation Instructions

All measurements are made indoors and each value must be measured at at least three point:                                                                                                H – the height of the sectional door opening (the distance from the ground to the top of the door opening)                                                                                B – the width of the door opening (the distance from the left edge of the door opening to the right edge)                                                                        h – at least 500 mm above the door opening (the distance from the top of the door opening to the ceiling)                                                                        b1/b2 – requires a lateral distance of at least 150 mm left and right (distance from the corresponding edge of the door opening to the obstacle)                 L is the depth of the room

When measuring H and B, take the maximum value as the final size
When measuring h, b1, b2 and L, take the smallest value as the final size

FAQs About Hydraulic Edge of Dock Levelers

About what are edge of dock leveler. The hydraulic edge dock leveler has beautiful appearance, ruggedness, stable switching, low noise, sealed insulation, safety and reliability, and the characteristics of saving plant space. It is widely used for its high practicality and high-end appearance.

Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Key maintenance practices include:
1. Inspecting hydraulic systems for leaks and proper fluid levels.
2. Cleaning the platform and components to prevent debris buildup.
3. Checking for any signs of wear or damage and addressing them promptly.
4. Lubricating moving parts according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Dock Leveler vs Edge Leveler: the primary difference lies in the installation method and operational range. A standard dock leveler (typically hydraulic or mechanical) is installed in a pre-formed concrete pit within the warehouse floor, allowing for a wide service range and higher weight capacities. In contrast, an edge of dock leveler is mounted directly to the face of the loading dock, requiring no pit construction.
While standard levelers are suited for heavy-duty, high-frequency loading with diverse trailer heights, EOD levelers are a cost-effective, space-saving solution for light-to-medium duty applications where the trailer height is consistent with the dock height.

For a mechanical edge of dock leveler, the operator uses a specialized hook or handle to pull the lip plate upward and backward, extending it over the truck bed. As the truck departs, the leveler automatically returns to its stored, vertical position. For the hydraulic edge of dock leveler, the process is automated via a push-button control station, which activates the lifting cylinders to position the lip onto the trailer. While standard levelers are suited for heavy-duty, high-frequency loading with diverse trailer heights, EOD levelers are a cost-effective, space-saving solution for light-to-medium duty applications where the trailer height is consistent with the dock height.

Our Seppes edge of dock levelers have passed CE certification, ISO9001 and SGS certification, and we will carefully check the products before leaving the factory to protect the rights and interests of customers.
